The Laboratory Quality Coordinator – As a member of the Laboratory Team, the Quality Coordinator will provide ongoing support to the quality management system by ensuring high quality, timely and accurate laboratory test results, and act as proactive liaison with nursing, medical staff, and laboratory staff within the hospital to enable improved operation of the department.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Provide a high degree of quality assurance by understanding policies and validating processes and procedures, and ensuring quality of clinical laboratory testing and specimen processing
  • Work with Senior Technologists to develop, monitor and follow-up improvement plans as required
  • Implement and audit tools to ensure sustained improvement is occurring
  • Prepare reports to the Laboratory leadership team and committees as required
  • Oversee departmental documentation in accordance with various regulatory agencies under the guidance of the Laboratory leadership team
  • Monitor incident reports as well as facilitates all risk management issues including occurrence reporting, complaints and risk assessments
  • Maintain procedures to ensure appropriate and immediate response to all issues and complaints; investigate complaints, errors, accidents or concerns as appropriate.
  • Ensure the laboratories are in compliance with regulatory, departmental and hospital standards.
  • Review and maintain the Quality Management System (QMS) by ensuring all new standards and regulatory requirements are updated and adhered to
  • Write accurate policies, perform QMS training, in-services and document staff education as required.
  • Represent Laboratory Program to ensure program activities are in alignment with Accreditation Canada standards and required organizational practices.
  • Support the Continuous Quality Improvement Committee by coordinating meeting schedules, create and distribute minutes, follow up on action items, etc.
  • Provide ongoing support to hospital Quality Teams and attend Quality Team meetings as requested.
  • Coordinate quality initiatives including review of Incident Reports and the execution of internal and external customer surveys.
  • Conduct analysis of specific quality issues or management analysis, as requested.
  • Develop, review and revise the Quality Management Manual.
  • Coordinate an internal audit and self-assessment to determine how the laboratory measures up
  • against Institute for Quality Management in Healthcare (IQMH) Accreditation requirements
  • Participate in the IQMH Accreditation preparation for inspections, and act as Laboratory lead in Hospital Accreditation preparation for inspections
  • Coordinate and prepare agenda for management review meeting as per defined interval
  • Assist with the development of laboratory policies, processes, procedures and forms in the electronic document control system
  • Coordinate the document management and control of the laboratory policies, processes, procedures and forms in electronic document control system
  • Assume the role of professional practice lead for the Laboratory:
  • Advance the profession through innovation and discovery in practice and education
  • Support activities of patient-focused care within the profession and ensure practice meets standards of care and the needs of the patient
  • Participate in organizational committees as required
  • Anticipates needs and initiate preventative actions to prevent non-conformances
  • Manage projects as assigned.
  • Act on behalf of the laboratory manager in their absence
  • Performs other duties, as assigned
 
Qualifications:

 

  • Completion of a recognized Medical Laboratory Technologist program with General MLT or B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Sciences
  • CMLTO (College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario) registration
  • Clinical Laboratory Quality Manager Graduate Certificate, or equivalent quality management systems education
  • Risk management, Project management and LEAN courses
  • ISO15189/ISO9001, Assessor Training and/or Internal Auditor training an asset
  • American Society for Quality certification an asset
  • 6 years’ experience in a hospital environment in laboratory setting
  • Previous experience in Laboratory quality position, supervisory experience would be an asset
  • Experience in collecting, analyzing and interpreting data for the purposes of quality improvement
  • Demonstrate knowledge of clinical laboratory QMS
  • Demonstrate knowledge of safety within the clinical and anatomical laboratories including biological, chemical recommendations.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with regulatory and accrediting standards; in depth knowledge of IQMH Accreditation Requirements
  • Proficiency with philosophy and methodology of continuous quality improvement (CQI) techniques
  • Computer literacy, with software applications such as Word and Excel
  • Computer proficiency with database management an asset
  • Remain flexible to changing priorities and work volume
  • Ability to plan, interpret, troubleshoot, problem-solve and provide recommendations
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills with the proven ability to mentor staff
  • Effective organizational/ prioritization skills, superior problem identification and solving skills
  • Ability to perform work with accuracy, efficiency and independence
  • Demonstrate ability to work in quality management system
  • Demonstrate interest in continuing education
  • Demonstrate aptitude for project management
  • Demonstrate understanding of, compliance with, and commitment to, patient safety responsibilities and corresponding hospital plans, policies and procedures in order to ensure a safe environment for patients.
