The Charge Nurse is a leadership role with accountabilities and responsibilities for coordinating and organizing the daily operation of the nursing care unit. The Charge Nurse ensures evidence-based, safe, and consistent patient care services are delivered on a daily basis, according to the Standards of Nursing Practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario, and approved standards of care of the Corporation

Duties Include:

Operational
  • Manages patient flow, in collaboration with unit manager, to determine staffing requirements, staff allocation and reassignment based on the needs of the department and patient care needs. Communicates these requirements in order to ensure needs are met
  • Manages elective activity including inductions and cesarean sections with non-elective activity consideration to optimize workflow and coordination of available resources
  • Works with leadership team to ensure all hospital and unit resources are aligned to support the successful achievement of patient care access and delivery
  • Leads and participates in unit meetings, unit committees and special projects
  • Leads and participates in the development of antenatal/triage clinic, and coordinates outpatient visits
  • Ensures occupational health and safety standards and legislation are followed and met
  • Assists with the orientation/education of new employees
  • Supports staff with workload concerns and determine strategies to meet patient care needs using current resources

Quality and Safety
  • Monitors unit specific data for trends, identifying opportunities for improvement. Leads and evaluates quality improvement initiatives
  • Recommends and participates in the creation and revision of policies and procedures
  • Timely follow-up on Safety & Quality Information System (SQIS) low and moderate risk reports
  • Promotes an environment that encourages and supports change using change management theory
  • Ensures that the Standards of Nursing Practice are implemented and assists in monitoring of standards as necessary

Staff Role Modelling
  • Supports and mentors staff in the provision of exceptional patient care
  • Fosters a positive team environment, addressing interpersonal and interdisciplinary conflicts that arise using conflict resolution skills
  • Role model positive attitudes and good work values.
  • Facilitate staff participation in initiatives which promote the profession
  • Create an environment that encourages professional development while incorporating a novice to expert approach.
  • Promote maintenance of confidentiality
  • Demonstrates a patient centered approach in all interactions
  • Provide leadership in facilitating clinical practice changes at the unit, hospital, and corporate level, in collaboration with members of the interprofessional team
  • Assists in the planning and coordination of educational opportunities for professional development of staff
  • Acts as a resource to staff with identified learning needs (e.g. professional, technical)
  • Ensures adherence to HHCC policies and procedures and provides direction to staff
  • Attends and actively participates in required in-service education programs.
  • Consult with managers/directors regarding practice issues and education needs of clinical staff
  • Consult and participate on a variety of interprofessional hospital committees.
  • Consult and participate in corporate initiatives

Patient Care

  • Ensures that referrals are made to appropriate members of the health care team members
  • Evaluates and maximizes use of individual care plans, process plans, discharge care plans and transfer tools along with assigned nurse to meet the needs of individual patients and minimize their length of hospitalization
  • Promotes a patient centered philosophy of care.
  • Ensures that the patient's present/potential problems are identified from the patient assessment: patient's health status is determined, health status is compared to the norms, problems are given priority according to impact upon the patient's health status and desire outcomes are formulated specific to the patient problems and established norms.
  • Acts rapidly and effectively, follows hospital policies and procedures in any emergency situation, and utilizes principles of management in any emergency situation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
 
Education:
  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing preferred
  • Certification in Perinatal nursing required
  • Preparation in Adult Education/Teaching and Training Adults preferred
  • Current BCLS certification required
  • NRP and Fetal health surveillance certification required
  • Current BFI breast feeding course required
  • Successful completion of a recognized leadership certificate or equivalent an asset
Experience:
  • Minimum of 5 years recent clinical practice experience in obstetrical setting required
  • Minimum of 2 years Team Leader/Resource nurse/ Charge nurse experience required
  • Demonstrated experience in effectively mentoring novice staff in obstetrics required
Competencies:
  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
