The NP will demonstrate a high level of autonomy and expert skill in formulating clinical decisions and appropriately managing a population of patients within the Emergency Department (ED) within a philosophy of patient-centered care. Abiding by the practice standards for an NP set out by the College of Nurses of Ontario (2009), the principle responsibilities may include: utilizing and demonstrating a comprehensive theoretical knowledge base and advanced level of clinical competencies, collecting and interpreting data about the health of the patient; providing follow-up/treatment to data about the health of the patient in collaboration with the Emergency physician; discharge planning; playing a leadership role and performing quality improvement; participating in policy and procedure development activities/programs; acting as resource and providing educational support to patients, families and staff.
 
The NP will work under the supervision of the ED Physician.
 
This position is accountable to the Director Medicine, Critical Care, Legal, Risk and Patient Experience and the Chief of the Emergency Department
 
Qualifications:
  • Masters Degree in Nursing / ACNP / Current extended class registration RN (EC) required with CNO
  • Five years nursing experience working in a hospital Emergency Department
  • Exemplary nursing clinical skills, knowledge and expertise, especially in patient assessments and discharge planning
  • Demonstrated patient/family teaching and staff education skills
  • Excellent organization, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent critical thinking, problem solving and organizational abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with all members of the team including physicians, patients and families
  • Evidence of well developed conflict management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with sensitive issues with families and staff
  • Evidence of initiative in ongoing knowledge development and reflective practice
  • Proficiency in computer skills and data management required (e.g. Excel, Word, Access)
  • Fluent in English (comprehension, reading, writing, and speaking)
